Dutcher Residence – Dallas, TX:
After working with Scapes, Incorporated on several previous projects, the client once again called on the expertise and professionalism of Scapes to design and implement the rehab of the landscape for their new residence. Situated on a side street in a quite North Dallas neighborhood, this stately home needed a landscape that blended with the surrounding properties, yet still made a statement. Consistent with the wishes of the client, Scapes Incorporated designed a formal front entry sequence, while a more relaxed and informal concept was brought to life for the private areas at the rear of the house.
The wall and gate system were existing, and when Scapes came to the job all of the existing landscaping was removed and redone. A formal hedge with several layers now softens the privacy wall on both sides. The hedge consists of Blue Point Juniper, Knock Out Roses, Dwarf Burford Holly, and Boxwood. It offers and effective visual screen, while serving an ornamental purpose as well.
Once inside the gate, the extensive stonework that comprises the driveway immediately comes into view. A very formal layout of plant materials is used in the motor court and at the front of the house. The large existing stone fountain provided a great focal point with which to plan the landscape around. Six specimen Crape Myrtles flank the imposing porte-cochere, and along with the Italian Cypress and Savannah Holly next to the house begin to bring a real sense of pedestrian scale to the front entryway of the house.
As you move into the backyard the synthetic turf putting green draws your attention along with the myriad of shade loving plants tucked around it. Moving past the putting green and the children’s play area comes into view along with the custom board on board wood privacy fence.
Finally in the back of the house is the impressive pool courtyard complete with swimming pool, hot tub, a covered seating area around the stone fire pit, and a custom outdoor kitchen which is also covered. Among the many highlights in the design are the fountains which dance along in the pool as well as the hot tub. There are even two fire bowls filled with tumbled glass which sit atop stone pedestals. Everything is very ordered and symmetrical around the architecture of the house itself. Plantings added to the area include Japanese Maple, and Japanese Yew, along with lots of Azaleas, Holly, and Liriope. There are also Sago Palms planted in decorative urns along with Windmill Palms, and trellised vine all which bring a bit of a tropical flare to this North Texas estate. The view in the courtyard is backed by large D.D. Blanchard Magnolia trees.
We’ve worked with Davey and his team at Scapes on a number of occasions. His landscape designs are always well thought out, and well executed. They have completed landscaping work at more than one house for us and at the end of the day we couldn’t be happier. For landscaping in Dallas we have, and will continue to recommend only one name, and that is Scapes, Incorporated.
